Abutment Grouting

Abutment Grouting for Infrastructure Stabilization

David Sorokovsky • February 13, 2025

What is Abutment Grouting?

Abutment grouting is a geotechnical solution used to stabilize soil and support infrastructure foundations such as bridges, culverts, and rail systems. This method fills voids, strengthens weak ground, and prevents structural settlement.

Abutment grouting or injection grouting involves injecting specialized materials into the soil beneath structures to improve load-bearing capacity and eliminate voids. It is commonly used in infrastructure rehabilitation to stabilize foundations and prevent movement.

Another Successful Project

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of our recent project:

Project Name: Bridge Abutment Grouting
Project Number: 240079
Completion Date: February 12, 2025
Location: Squamish, British Columbia

Abutment Grouting Project Overview

The project involved abutment grouting of a culvert located beneath a railway bridge. The primary objectives were to fill existing voids and stabilize the surrounding soil to ensure the structural integrity of the railway infrastructure.

Abutment Grouting Process and Materials

To achieve optimal results, we utilized a two-component rigid polyurethane foam system. This material is specifically formulated to increase the bearing capacity of the ground beneath foundations. It is ideal for lifting concrete slabs, filling voids, and stabilizing soil.

This foam quickly after application, typically reaching 80-90% of its full strength within 15 minutes. It can be injected in wet environments and bonds effectively with both soil and concrete, making it suitable for our project’s requirements.

Grouting Execution Process

Our team conducted a thorough assessment of the site to identify all voids and areas requiring stabilization. We then strategically injected the foam into the targeted zones. The rapid setting time of the foam allowed for efficient progress, minimizing disruption to the railway operations.

Results of Abutment Grouting

Upon completion, the culvert and surrounding soil exhibited significant improvement in stability. The voids were effectively filled, and the abutment’s structural integrity was enhanced, ensuring the continued safe operation of the railway bridge.

Benefits of Abutment Grouting

  • Stabilizes weak or shifting soil
  • Increases load-bearing capacity
  • Prevents settlement and structural movement
  • Reduces the need for excavation
  • Fast and cost-effective solution

Conclusion:

This project underscores our commitment to utilizing advanced materials and techniques to maintain and improve critical infrastructure. The successful application of foam in this context highlights its effectiveness in geotechnical grouting applications.

Our abutment grouting solutions support infrastructure projects across Canada and the United States, providing reliable and long-lasting ground stabilization.
