Surfaces That Benefit From Abrasive Blasting

Because we can select even mildly abrasive materials, like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, and adjust the pressure and speed at which the medium hits the surface by using different sized nozzles and changing the psi, abrasive blasting (wet or dry) is a safe and highly effective way to remove contaminants, clean, and prepare surfaces such as:

  • Stainless Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Mild Steel
  • Copper
  • Brass
  • Silver
  • Tile
  • Chrome
  • Glass
  • Concrete
  • Stone
  • Mild Steel
  • Wood
  • And More

Our sandblasting or abrasive blasting technicians choose the best medium and method of cleaning and preparing your surfaces for refinishing and coating. You can rest assured that your commercial or industrial property receives a superior cleaning and preparation service without harm.

Types Of Blasting

Sandblasting

Sandblasting is the generic term for abrasive blasting. It is the process of cleaning, removing contaminants, smoothing or roughening, and shaping a hard surface by striking solid particles onto the surface at high pressure and speed using compressed air. It is similar to sandpaper sanding but is faster, more effective, allows for a more smooth and even surface, and can remove paint, oxidation, coatings, scratches, flaws, and stains even in corners, edges, and nooks and crannies.

Sandblasting is a misnomer since the original medium silica sand used is no longer the medium of choice due to its health risks and harmful properties. Today, we use a wide variety of mediums that are safe for the abrasive blasting technician and the environment, like ground corn, walnut seeds, baking soda (soda blasting), plastic particles, and glass beads.

Wet Abrasive Blasting (Wet Blasting)

Wet abrasive blasting uses water as the fluid moving the abrasives. The water traps the dust produced and lubricates the surface by cushioning the impact on the surface, minimizing the removal of sound material.

Advantages Of Wet Blasting

  • Can use extremely fine or coarse media with densities ranging from plastic to steel
  • Can use hot water and soap to allow simultaneous degreasing and blasting
  • Using water rather than compressed air makes it safer to use siliceous materials for blasting
  • Is safe for removing hazardous material such as asbestos, lead, radioactive or poisonous products
  • Results in an extremely clean surface due to zero static production

Wet blasting of mild steel will result in immediate or 'flash' corrosion of the blasted steel substrate due to the presence of water. The lack of surface recontamination also allows for the use of a single piece of equipment for multiple blasting operations—e.g., stainless steel and mild steel items can be processed in the same equipment with the same media without problems.

Vapour Blasting

Vapour Blasting is a method of abrasive blasting that uses water and pressurized water to create a high-speed mist to force the abrasive medium onto the surface. It is milder than wet blasting, making it a safer and more versatile alternative to wet or dry abrasive blasting (sandblasting).

At Quantum Industrial Solutions, vapour blasting is our preferred method for sandblasting surfaces. It is a cleaner abrasive blasting method than dry blasting because there is minimal dust. It is easier to clean away the abrasive medium and materials removed when the job is done. Because vapour blasting is a low-dust cleaning method, it is even safe enough for removing hazardous material such as asbestos, lead, radioactive or poisonous products without the risk of those hazardous chemicals and contaminants getting in the air.

Benefits of Vapour Abrasive Blasting (Dustless Blasting)

Vapour Abrasive Blasting:

  • Generates 92 percent less airborne dust than dry blasting
  • Can be used on thin gauge aluminum without warpage
  • Preps surface and washes/de-greases at the same time
  • Uses less water than slurry or traditional wet abrasive blasting
  • Optimizes air, water, and media ratio – resulting in a fine mist with a blast that is powerful but produces less dust
  • Creates a lubricating cushion that protects the surface and the media
  • Reduces medium breakdown, so less medium is needed
  • Uses less media which equals less containment and cleanup
  • Can safely remove lead paint, asbestos, and other hazardous materials

Soda Blasting

Soda Blasting uses sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) as the medium when abrasive blasting surfaces. Sodium bicarbonate is a mildly abrasive material that is gentle, safe, and effective for removing paint, oxidation, cleaning, and preparing softer surfaces like aluminum. Soda Blasting will not warp or bend soft metals or delicate surfaces, is eco-friendly and absorbant for easy cleanup.

Corn Blasting

Corn Blasting applies finely ground corn as the medium and compressed air when abrasive blasting surfaces. Corn a sustainable and eco-friendly method of cleaning and preparing surfaces. It absorbs oil and dirt while drying the surface. The fineness of the corn grit medium varies depending on the resilience of the surface and materials being removed, making it an extremely versatile medium. Because corn is gentle, absorbent, and drying, it is an excellent medium for removing stains from wood or log structures, cleaning brass and copper, calcium deposits from tile and grout, and preparing machine parts, automotive, equipment, heavy equipment, and more.

Bead Blasting

Bead Blasting is the process of removing deposits, coatings, and contaminants from your surfaces by applying fine glass beads at high pressure without damaging the surface.

Bead Blasting can:

  • Clean calcium deposits from pool tiles and other surfaces
  • Remove embedded fungus, and brighten grout color
  • Remove paint in auto bodywork because it creates a more outstanding surface profile than sandblasting
  • Create a uniform surface finish on machined parts
  • Clean and prepare mineral specimens that have a Mohs hardness of 7 or less
  • Create a dull satin finish on surfaces that require it for refinishing

No Project Too Big, Small or Remote
