What Is Fireproofing?

Fireproofing is the use of non-combustible, heat resistant materials and the application of specially formulated non-flammable coatings that prevent “structural collapse and allow safe egress of occupants in case of fire” (Encyclopedia Britannica).

While many construction materials are non-flammable by nature - steel, concrete, and stone, other materials are. Applying fire-retardant coatings called spray-applied fire-resistive materials (or SFRM) to these surfaces prevents them from succumbing to fire.
